On Wednesday, November 2, we’re pleased to welcome author Phil Adamo to Skylark to present his debut novel, The Medievalist.

The Medievalist is a fictional response to the real-life threat from contemporary neo-Nazis. Set in today's America, the novel is chock full of real history, yet resonates with present-day issues: the dangers of racism and white supremacy, the uses and abuses of the past, and the responsibilities of academia.

White supremacists are 'weaponizing' the Middle Ages. One historian aims to stop them. Embattled history prof Abe Kantorowicz enlists two Yale grad students, Molly Isaacson and Quinton Quick, to fight neo-Nazis on the battlefield of propaganda. Armed only with a mysterious manuscript and their knowledge of history, they set in motion a plan to disrupt and derange the Alt-Right for years to come. ​

Phil Adamo is a former circus clown turned medieval history prof turned novelist—a professional background that engenders a love of irony.  He taught medieval history for two decades at Augsburg College, where he was named Minnesota Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He has written both academic and popular books and articles about the Middle Ages, including Pilgrimage for Eight; New Monks in Old Habits; and “Braveheart at the Battle of Falkirk,” in Medieval LEGO. He lives in Minneapolis with a precocious border collie named Saga. The Medievalist, a satirical thriller, is his first novel.
