We are very pleased to welcome Sean Spence to Skylark to celebrate the launch of his debut book, Breaking Barriers: Disability History in the United States. The book provides an overview of the subject and is chock full of stories about incredible men, women, and events that should be a part of our history text books, but mostly are not.
Please join Sean for selected readings from his book. Stick around for discussion about disability history and the powerful stories to be found there. Books will be available for sale; all profits will be donated to The Salvation Army’s Disability Support Fund, assisting people with disabilities who are facing poverty.
Sean Spence’s interest in disability starts primarily with his personal experience as someone with multiple sclerosis, combined with his love of history (he earned his BA in US history from MU in 1993). The more he has learned, the more he has seen a giant, empty space where the teaching of disability history should be. This culminates in the writing of Breaking Barriers: Disability History in the United States.
